Steps on how to create Paint splash effect in Photoshop :-


  • So the first step is to select Quick selection tool

  • Now using Quick selection tool just select the Model in the image as show below

  • After the selection click on Add layer mask icon

  • This will only keep your selection i.e model and remove rest of the background as shown in the below image

After clicking on Layer mask icon
  • Now click on Create new fill or adjustment layer icon and select Solid color over there

  • Then set the color as white in the Pop up and then click on Ok

  • After that bring this color layer below model layer by dragging it

  • After that make the model layer active by clicking on the layer

  • Then press CTRL + J to create a duplicate of the layer

  • Now hide the original model layer by clicking on eye icon beside layer

  • Then right click on mask of the duplicate model layer and then select Apply layer mask over there

  • Then again right click on the layer and select Convert to smart object over there

  • Now go to Filter tab and then expand Stylize and then select Diffuse over there

  • Now in the pop up select Anisotropic option and then click Ok

  • Now we have to apply the same filter again so for that press CTRL + F (this will give you previously applied filter ) which will give you diffuse pop up so again select Anisotropic over there and then click on Ok

  • After that create a new group by clicking on Create new group icon

  • Now drag that group layer and bring it below model layer

  • Then make sure group icon layer is active and then click on Create new layer icon to add a new layer inside the group

  • Now right click on the model layer and select Create clipping mask over there

  • Now make the newly created layer active by clicking on the layer

  • Then set the foreground color as White and then select brush tool

  • After that click on Toggle brush panel icon

  • Now select any splash brush and then click on the document using brush which will bring back the model in the form of the brush

  • Now like this way keep changing the size of the brush (Short cut : Press [ to reduce the size of the brush and ] to increase its size ) , keep rotating it and keep changing the brush and create a nice effect by clicking on the document

After using brushes
  • Now press CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + E to merge all the layers into a single layer

  • Then right click on the merged layer and select Convert to smart object over there
